A new anime series has been announced: Hourou Musuko (Wondering Son), an adaptation of a popular manga by Takako Shimura. The premise seems... interesting:

The story depicts a young boy named Shūichi Nitori who wants to be a girl, and his friend Yoshino Takatsuki, a girl who wants to be a boy. The series deals with issues such as transsexuality, gender identity, and the beginning of puberty.

Gender-identity themes are hardly new to anime. On the other hand, it's set to be a noitaminA series, running in January (alongside Yamakan's Fractale). The director is Ei Aoki (Ga Rei Zero, Kara no Kyoukai 1), and the script/composition is being handled by the popular Mari Okada (who's also doing series composition on Fractale!). The Mari Okada hour of power indeed!
