So BD volume 2 of Asobi ni Ikuyo was released and it comes with this super-erotic plastic sheet. This has gotta be one of the hottest physical features to come with an anime DVD ever.
But what are you supposed to do with it? .. oh wait..
Just some thoughts on the oricon weekly Blu-ray and DVD sales list for anime:
● In its first week, Asobi ni Ikuyo #1 sold just over 3K (combined DVD+BD), which is borderlined to the usual pass/fail fail test. A lot of people were quick to say it bombed, but if it sells a bit more in the followings weeks it'll still be profitable (especially because it was a cheap-ass show).
● Keion sold really well, as expected, reaching over 30K with combined sales (28K being Blu-ray!).
● Seitokai Yakuindomo performed (surprisingly, I think) well, selling around 5K Blu-ray
Next week, we'll get to see how most of the new season shows performed!
Even when everything else about this episode was distinctly below average, Asobi ni Ikuyo continues to get it right in its one redeeming area: fanservice! Yes, the story is terrible. Yes, it's highly retarded. Yes, the animation was poor. But was it still entertaining? Yes!~ Almost topping the extreme dosage of school swimsuits in episode 3, this week we get to feast our eyes on Aoi and Manami in sexy bunny-girl bikinis!! As you can see above, the win of these costumes is maximum! Then of course, there's the continued nekomimi appeal.
So it was still entertaining thanks to the eye-candy and the fact that it doesn't take itself too seriously. But the continuity, and poor animation puts this below the standards of other Asobi ni Ikuyo episodes. Also, I'm going to have to come out and say: Assisteroids are fucking lame.
Also, Aoi is surprisingly flat-chested! I never realised, but she has a lovely 'zannen mune'!
This week, Asobi ni Ikuo titilates with powerful doses of nekomimi, and otaku culture! I'm genuinely okay with that. The production qualities were fairly good, with enough animation to keep it feeling vital. The humour was good, with the niche approach of referencing other anime and doing an Akiba-tour complete with ero-store gags and merchandise heaven. Then there's the insane neko-cult, led by an extemist nekomimi fangirl who uses an army of maids to kidnap her idol, Eris. Yep, it's still very ridiculous, but unlike the stupid government agency/CIA plot, this is ridiculous in a good way.
Every anime should have an Akiba visit episode!
Screencaps from episode 4 of Asobi ni Ikuyo!
So they take a pilgramige to Akiba .. that sounds like a fairly standard anime episode, but as these caps show, they've taken the references to the next level! These characters from Zero no Tsukaima and Sacred Blacksmith actually appear in Asobi!!!?? Or is it just really superb cosplay? I haven't seen the episode just yet.
I think they were trying to top the cardboard cut-out of Horo in DRRR!!
Now this is more like it!!! It took me a long time to get around to this episode (I seem to be behind in everything these days!), but if I'd known it was going to be this much of a great fanservice spectactle, I would have made the effort sooner!! Fanservice spectacle sums this up pretty well. The plot is trite and immature, the characterisation lacking in earnesty, and the humour is your standard ecchi-harem fare (ie. expect the male lead to get hit a lot by girls for consistently being in the wrong place at the wrong time). Luckily, as the audience, we get to see the ero sights without the injury! As a big sukumizu fan, the episode got on my good side quickly with an opening scene of unadulterated school swimsuit titilation. You know that cheesy sci-fi line aliens use 'we've taken the form most pleasing to human eyes'. I think these girls are the first aliens to truly live up to that promise!
There's also plenty of frustratingly concealed nudity, and a budding harem love story beginning to evolve. Even if the characters are impossible to take seriously, I have to admit, I find Kana Hanazawa's character as moe as she is generic!
If the show just gives up on its rubbish story and dramatic aspects and focuses on being a mindless ecchi series, then I say bring it on! More episodes like this please!
I don't have much to say about the production qualities which have been remarkably unremarkable after the first episode.
